Respiratory infections caused by viruses are common and can be very contagious, spreading by coughing, sneezing and contact with contaminated surfaces. A health care professional might have an idea about the cause based on symptoms, season, medical history, or recent travel, but they will not be able to positively diagnose the virus without testing. The ability to efficiently identify infected individuals type of respiratory disease can help limit the spread of the disease and clarifying the patients condition and treatment.
The aim of the respiratory panel is a RT-qPCR assay intended for the detection of nucleic acids from the four most common strains of influenza (B Yamagata, B Victoria, A H1N1 and A H3N2), SARS-CoV-2 and RSV A/B. The different viruses can be found in the liquid from the upper and lower respiratory tracts of infected individuals. Samples can be obtained by nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal swabs or from saliva. The assay is applicable to standard Real-Time PCR platforms and can be used as a tool to limit the spread of dangerous and contagious respiratory diseases.
